    “Pioneering New-Age Aesthetics”
Interview with Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karaaltin
Hello doctor and thank you very much for having me. Could you start by giving us a brief overview of your accomplishments?

It’s a pleasure. Sure. I spent my childhood in the US before coming back to Turkey to pursue my medical education. I was ranked 12 out of 25,000 surgeons in Turkey upon graduation. A few years later, in 2012, I passed the examination and became a member of the European Board of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery. I would like to mention that I have always carried out my medical practice while researching. I was granted the global award and recognition of “Best Experimental Paper” in 2016, which might be my greatest achievement. I spend a great deal of time studying, searching and learning, I believe we can never know enough about the human body, I am humble enough to say that. That’s why I’m often abroad, mostly in the US, assisting to congresses and giving talks. Besides, I have other obligations. I am a fellow of the International Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2018, Benito Novas, CEO of the Global Stem Cells Group named me Associate Professor in Miami.

Fascinating. Could you tell us why you decided to become a plastic surgeon?

You don’t decide such a thing. It decides you. Do you know Asclepius, the ancient Greek doctor? He has a dialogue starting with the words “do you want to be a doctor, my son?” you will have to give up your private life, people always need you. This knowingly, I think it’s the most beautiful profession in the world. When I think about it, helping people is the best reason to get up every morning. Of course, we all do this in our own way. But medicine can be extremely helpful, depending on the case, it can truly transform your life.

Amazing! What do you like the most about your job? And the least?

The words of thank you and the satisfaction of patients is something I cannot compare to anything else. That is surely the best part of my job. The worst part… (takes a long pause). I cannot think of anything to answer that right now, but it’s a lot of work. Sometimes taking a week off is a matter of life or death. But I don’t do breaks much. When you are passionate about what you do, it’s not really working. And then, when I stop working, I am impatient to get back at it (laughs). Am I a workaholic? Maybe, but I’m happy this way.

Main Achievements and Scientific Breakthrough of Prof. Dr. Karaaltin

    • Fellow of the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery
    (EBOPRAS)
    • Member of ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons)
    • Ranked 12 out of 25.000 medical doctors, in the National Turkish Examination
    • Associate Professor of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgery by the Global Stem Cell Group
    • Awarded the “BEST EXPERIMENTAL PAPER” distinction in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2016)
    • Founder of “Pixellence Istanbul”
    • Creator of “DaVinci Robotic Technology”
    • Development of the Four-Corner concept for “facial anti-aging”
    • Practitioner of Advanced Safe BBLTM

Very impressive! Could you tell us about your research and innovations?

Sure. In the last years we have witnessed very important technological advances that have facilitated and perfectioned the medical profession. For example, in digital technology. I have been involved in projects all around the world to extract all the possible juice from such innovations. This is very important for surgeons and patients alike, which is why I teach surgeons all over the world. 3D rhinoplasty, for example, was born when we applied digital technology, scanning and printing into the equation, moving beyond mere simulation, and greatly improving precision and results. Da Vinci Robotic Technology focuses on breast augmentation. Each of these would be a topic on themselves, there’s loads of material online and in specialized reviews. The Advanced Safe BBL technique, which I invented, also proves how technology is bringing great new benefits.

I suppose you have a family. How do you find the life-work balance?

It has gotten much better with time, that’s for sure. You get to finance a team, when I started working for Care in Turkey I got a huge load off my back, I needed that to fully focus on my duty as a surgeon. This is good for everyone, especially for patients. On the academic side, you know, as a researcher, I also get the chance to transfer part of my responsibilities. So yes, my junior years have paid off.

What is the best thing you have ever heard from a patient?

I have treated some extremely severe cases of malformations, serious injuries, accidents, in decades of practice. “You have saved my life” must be the best thing I have ever heard. You hear many nice things, but I don’t think any can compare to that.

Thank you so much for your time doctor.

    My pleasure, thank you.
